My first encounter with TACET was sparked by a recording of the Auryn Quartet. Their rendition of Schubert’s Quartet Movement in C minor (D 703) has even served as a challenge in some CD player tests – really far too good for that! The four musicians came together as a quartet in 1981 and embarked on the long journey to become an ensemble; to that end, they studied with the Amadeus Quartet and the Guarneri String Quartet and participated successfully in competitions. What excites me about them? – Their quartet sound has a central core that is both sensual and homogeneous, and from that point they make structures audible, explore dynamic extremes, and communicate tensions in the music. They are therefore no less “modern” than others, and no less “aware” or “thoughtful” in their playing. But they observe the proper sequence: to portray the extreme, one must first find the center from which to depart – not the other way around. They have received enthusiastic reviews and awards for their Haydn, Beethoven, and Britten recordings. My recommendation for a first listening encounter with the Auryn Quartet remains their fantastic, pulsating Schubert recordings – they strike straight to the heart.
