Description

"Few interpreters will summon up the heroism, the dedication and the special talent required for the study of György Ligeti′s études. Hats off to Erika Haase, whom we welcome as the new heroine! Her recent recording of these wonderful pieces renders the emotional colouring and the psychic nuances, especially of the lyrical études, in a way unheard before. Respect and congratulation!" (Alfred Brendel)

From the generous hands of the pianist pour torrents of sound. Opulent, rapid, voluptuous, gentle when needed, often solidly forthright, violent when necessary. Achieving an ambitious feat, Erika Haase brings a truly new life to these études. The first four, by Stravinsky, immediately allow her to deploy her full virtuosity. Bartók’s Studies op. 18 sound entirely convincing. Through her exuberant playing, she makes one forget the pianistic difficulties of these pages, whose vitality remains intact. Messiaen seems far less revolutionary today than in the Darmstadt era, when he sparked a new wave of musical thought. The intelligence of her interpretation makes even the most complex ideas in these pivotal pieces readable. Erika Haase seems to live this music fully, down to the smallest detail. Full of colors and subtle nuances, her playing makes unheard-of timbres vibrate—the piano becomes gamelan, distant bells, or other unidentifiable sound objects, all the while remaining a sovereign instrument, pianississimo. A big bravo.

  2. Klassik heute

… In short: Ligeti’s études, this “catalog of acoustic illusions,” have never been recorded so enchantingly, so grippingly, so thrillingly, and so lulling as they are by Erika Haase.

  4. Répertoire

    Répertoire „10“
… Here we encounter a great Lady of the contemporary piano, just as Claude Helffer is its great Gentleman. I do not hesitate to place Erika Haase on a level with the sensuous Cathy Berberian, in the realm of the voice. There is in her a rare propensity to make contemporary music into ‘great music.’ …
