197 CD / Études pour piano Vol. V: Johannes Brahms
Description
This is already the fifth CD recording that pianist Erika Haase has dedicated to the theme of 'Études for the Piano.' After Ligeti, Liszt, Schumann, and others, she now turns to Johannes Brahms. The now 77-year-old pianist has taken on a lot with these technically demanding works by Brahms. Yet, with her still-present agility and, above all, her ability to illuminate the voices in the Paganini Variations, she manages to create a fascinating soundscape. Haase does not rush through the variations with wild technique, as many of her younger colleagues do, but always manages to bring out the melody and the main theme. The lyricism that she brings to light is so beautiful and balanced that one seems to perceive new aspects in these variations. Haase divides the two books of these variations with Brahms' arrangement of Bach's 'Chaconne' for the left hand, which she plays with breath and flow, but with so much inner calm and balance that some of the drama is missing. The further studies on works by Chopin, Schubert, and Weber are strikingly clear in their expression. Erika Haase delivers a consistently exciting and, above all, different recording here, sometimes really against many of today's listening habits, but so coherent in itself that one listens fascinated. (...) It is highly impressive how the piano professor, born in Darmstadt in 1935, masters the pieces—technically confident, with nimble and secure hands, and with nuances in expression, as often demanded in the Paganini Variations. (...)

In her fifth volume dedicated to keyboard studies, Erika Hasse emerges as a Brahms exponent of the first order.
(...) Kudos to Professor Haase for her mastery of many notes.
