    More and more, a truly significant Beethoven cycle is emerging. The Fifth Symphony is always a special challenge within any new complete recording of the symphonies, as it is by far the most popular and thus the hardest to shape in a way that still takes your breath away upon listening. Those familiar with Rajski’s Chamber Philharmonic’s previous recordings of the first two symphonies and the Seventh will hardly be surprised that this task has been accomplished with flying colors: This Fifth is precisely the forward-rushing, literally sweeping revolutionary music it ought to be, and the transparent, clearly structured sound of this comparatively small orchestra serves it wonderfully. Rarely is the Beethoven experience so direct as it is here; even in fundamentally similar interpretive approaches—from Scherchen and Leibowitz to Harnoncourt and Gardiner—there usually remains a certain, reverence-based distance from the listener, which Rajski’s ensemble seems to bridge: One feels directly addressed. It is almost unbelievable that such a significant contribution to Beethoven discography has also been produced in legendary, purist analog and tube quality. A must for collectors!
