Description

"With this recording too the Abegg Trio defends its place in the top class of the world-best trios. But musical magic like this requires a great deal of courage and risk-taking with a breakneck interpretation: these explosions of emotion and the gentlest pianissimo effects literally take place on the border of a musical nothing. The fact that the three musicians master this task so easily is due above all to their perfect coordination. [...]" (HifiVision)

  1. Fono Forum

The frequent pairing of Debussy’s and Ravel’s string quartets could just as easily apply to their piano trios, especially since Debussy’s early work became publicly available in 1985. This latest recording is now the third currently on offer. Whether it truly is the "first recording authorized by the publisher (!)" remains debatable. Had the liner notes mentioned "vinyl record" instead of "sound recording," this claim might have been less questionable. However, it should not be forgotten that the Stuttgart Piano Trio performed the piece at its public premiere in Munich and later—superbly—for Süddeutscher Rundfunk, though no vinyl record was made of those performances. This small note is not meant to detract from the artistic and technical excellence of the Abegg Trio’s production—quite the opposite. Their recording of both works (incidentally, the Abegg Trio’s rendition of Ravel’s Trio is also available on harmonia mundi, albeit in a different coupling) fully meets the high expectations we have come to associate with this musically outstanding ensemble. The performance is marked by great verve, utmost precision, and a keen sense of sound. The recording engineers have optimally balanced the instruments, ensuring that the ensemble as a whole, as well as the individual instruments, always retain their distinct contours. Such balance is typically difficult to achieve with a single room microphone, as was common in the past. In summary: this is a chamber music production as it should be.

  2. Hifi Vision

With this recording, the Abegg Trio once again asserts its place among the elite of the world's finest trios. Such sonic magic, however, demands a bold willingness to take risks in interpretation: these explosive emotional outbursts and the most delicate pianissimo effects occur quite literally on the edge of audible sound. The trio’s ability to master this challenging task with such apparent ease is primarily due to their near-perfect coordination. And if Ravel’s trio ultimately leaves a stronger impression than Debussy’s early work, it certainly isn’t due to their performance.
