Description

This is vol. 2 of the "Haydn Quartets" by W. A. Mozart, played by Auryn Quartet and in the guise of TACET Real Surround Sound. After strong recommendations for the previous Auryn/Imai Mozart string quintets recording (Audiophile Highlight in Stereo, klassik-heute recommendation, nomination for ICMA) and lots of praise for the CD version of this recording there is not a lot to say. Except maybe that once again TACET Real Surround Sound musically reaches far beyond normal stereo. Every magical detail of the interaction between Matthias Lingenfelder, Jens Oppermann, Stewart Eaton und Andreas Arndt becomes clear. An ambitious multichannel recording is no high tech version of stereo, for many listeners it is equal to a live concert.

The six string quartets by Mozart dedicated to Haydn are divided into two groups of three when they were written. The latest recording by the ‘Auryn Quartett’ is released with one work each from these two sub-units. The quartets are among the great contributions that also inspired Beethoven. These string quartets, numbers 16 and 18, are presented by the ‘Auryn Quartet’, so to speak, as could be heard in advance, with a tireless delving into the matter that shines in all aspects of the playing. All subtleties are explored, dynamic nuances are experienced, shades of sound and articulation are teased out. And yet the music offers flowing momentum and immediately appealing warmth, because these four experienced musicians avoid the danger of academic performance without inner participation. And yet one would have wished for even more of this inner involvement. As always, the Tacet label captured the game brilliantly with their special recording technology, so that the sound allows you to hear all the details.

At home and yet right in the middle: that could be the sound philosophy of the Tacet label. Audiophiles get their money's worth here, because the unity of musical playback, recording on sound carriers and playback on the highest possible audio components such as a stereo system goes hand in hand. On the one hand, this has the reputation of being primarily for higher earners, because anyone who has ever noticed the excellent prices in a hi-fi studio knows that the sky is the limit. On the other hand, that doesn't have to be the case, after all, there are excellent hi-fi systems in the budget range and a lot of the systems and accessories that are available in the higher price segment can confidently be described as a matter of faith.

Sometimes the good old stereo system just works, then a good recording like this one should sound good. However, if you play it in SACD format, i.e. with more than just two channels, then you can definitely experience your little sound miracle. In the case of this recording with the Auryn Quartet, you really have the feeling of sitting right in the middle: the two violins come from the front left and right, the viola sits at the back left and the cello on the right. Then all you have to do is close your eyes and listen.

There's nothing more you need to do given this brilliant recording. To praise the Auryn Quartet would be to carry owls to Athens. The quartet has been one of the best in the world for decades and the recording of the second Haydn quartet by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart confirms this status once again. Music is played here with an eye for detail but also with musical enthusiasm. The sound culture is beyond any doubt, the interpretation is precisely measured. This is quartet culture at its finest.
