"The Seven Words" are a composition which Joseph Haydn was commissioned to write. They were intended to be performed in churches, with each of the seven pieces following a short text or sermon by the priest. The texts between the pieces of music on this recording reflect the original plan and "performance practice". The role of the priest was played by the famous rhetorician Walter Jens.

Laudatio for the Award of the German Record Critics' Annual Prize to the Haydn Cycle by the Auryn Quartet
Joseph Haydn is considered the father of the string quartet genre. The Auryn Quartet recorded his nearly 70 string quartets over a two-year period: for the first time using the critically edited "purified" text, with esprit, lively emotion, and highly differentiated ensemble playing, all within a natural sound space: a small sensation. Such an undertaking requires a label that is not only technically state-of-the-art but also willing to take risks. The Stuttgart-based TACET Musikproduktion has distinguished itself several times through this very combination of skill and daring. Therefore, we award the Annual Prize to the Auryn Quartet and their producer/sound engineer Andreas Spreer for their epochal Haydn project, which is already assured a prominent place in the annals of sound recording.

In this endeavor, the Auryn Quartet proves an inspired partner, translating his reflections into sound and tone, commenting in the "language" of music on the meaning of the words, and illuminating their deeper resonance. Founded in 1981, the Auryn Quartet plays as if turned inward, yet without sacrificing expressivity or sonorous sensuality. Here, every note carries immense weight, standing almost alone before being intensely woven into the fabric of voices… The entire work, with Walter Jens as the speaker of his own texts, was produced by TACET—highly recommended!

Interpreting this intimate devotional music with sustained tension is no easy task—variety must emerge from within its very structure. The Auryn Ensemble ensures clear architecture, savoring every articulatory nuance, such as the sound blend between the violins and solo cello (Sonata II) or the delicately plucked pizzicati of Sonata V. Dramatically, they build and release tension with precision. And Walter Jens’s texts weave in haunting reflections from recent times, deepening the experience.
