Description

A veritable audiophile delicacy - lovingly preserved historic microphones, a mixing desk consisting of nostalgic V72 amplifiers and W85 regulators, the analogue M5 Telefunken tape recorder - each item a legend in itself! May we proudly present this illustrious combination of equipment, here to preserve beautiful music “TUBE ONLY”, in other words without transistors. The CD leaflet is illustrated with impressive colour photos. Available on CD, SACD and even on LP (180g, recorded without the use of transistors).

The visually unusual cover with the subtitle “Captivating Violin Pieces” features an LP from Tacet’s “Tube Only” project. From the two Neumann M-49 and two U-47 microphones to the two modified Telefunken V-69a amplifiers driving the Ortofon (DSS 661) cutting head mounted on a Neumann VMS 74, the signal did not pass through a single transistor. The result is a violin and piano sound rarely heard so open and colorful. But is this repertoire—which is more typical of a Fritz Kreisler than of modern violinists—worth the effort? Absolutely. It’s simply a joy to listen to Daniel Gaede, who, after winning competitions, became concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic, following in the footsteps of Odnoposoff, Boskowsky, and Schneiderhan, serving up musical “pralines.” He is a fantastic, modern confectioner who never over-sweets! Xuesu Liu accompanies him with confidence at the piano. One wonders whether the two performers and sound engineer Andreas Spreer might one day form a team for a sonata program—Franck or Fauré would be wonderful…

If someone – especially a Northerner – becomes concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic at the age of 26, one can safely assume considerable talent. The Hamburg-born Daniel Gaede has repeatedly proven this through successful participation in international competitions, numerous concerts with the greatest orchestras and conductors of our time, and several highly praised recordings. The latter, of course, have almost all been recorded with the wrong tools for the wrong medium. All the more gratifying, then, is a recording with this outstanding musician in which not only digital zero-one technology but also transistors were entirely avoided. The repertoire: miniatures by Tchaikovsky, Shchedrin, Massenet, Schubert, Drigo, Moszkowski, Elgar, de Bériot, and Ponce/Heifitz – so-called “encore pieces” that are often underestimated, but in the hands of a true musician can blossom into something wonderful. Fritz Kreisler was a master of this art, as was Ruggiero Ricci. Gaede is one as well. (2003)
