Description

Matthias Lingenfelder has always had a special affinity for French music due to his studies in Paris with Gérard Poulet, the son of Gaston, for whom Debussy wrote his violin sonata. Since 1995 at the latest, after the Auryn Quartet and Peter Orth had recorded the piano quintets of Gabriel Fauré, Primarius Matthias Lingenfelder and Peter dreamed of recording his works for violin and piano. Many years passed, years full of other experiences. In 2022, the Auryn Quartet ended its concert activities and with it the long-standing exclusive contract between Auryn and TACET came to an end. Before that, I wanted one last recording with them for the label, as a farewell, no matter what. That didn't materialise. But Matthias still had the desire and energy. And so did Peter! So what could be more obvious than finally realising their long-cherished wish? The result is a serene, mature, confident, virtuoso, sensitive and loving performance of this unconventionally beautiful repertoire.

  1. Audio und Stereoplay

    Audio und Stereoplay Klangtipp!
The works for violin and piano by composer Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924)—the teacher of greats such as Ravel, Enescu, and Boulanger—sound beautifully melodious and French, as fully recorded here. This applies to both the two sonatas and the shorter pieces Berceuse, Romance, Andante, and Morceau de Concours. Violinist Matthias Lingenfelder and pianist Peter Orth capture the slightly melancholic tone of the works and the interplay between bright and dark colors with great precision and inspiration in their performance. With a joy for playing and sensitivity, they achieve a convincing interpretation—perfectly complemented by the excellently balanced sound. Très bien fait!

    Klassik heute Recommendation

At times, the music of Gabriel Fauré seems a bit like the wallflower of French Romanticism. There is hardly a composer who was more productive and diligent, yet Camille Saint-Saëns, Claude Debussy, or Maurice Ravel are always mentioned first. However, Fauré not only worked his way through numerous musical genres almost systematically, but he also left behind melodies that—such as the Sicilienne or the Requiem—have timeless value. As for the innovative potential of his music, Fauré often flies under the radar of many music lovers and comes up short compared to contemporaries like the undoubtedly more humorous but also more conservative Saint-Saëns—despite, for example, a work like the second Violin Sonata, which is rhythmically extraordinarily complex in places, precisely because of its impressionistic sonority.

    Pleasantly unpretentious

It is all the more delightful that violinist Matthias Lingenfelder, long-time first violinist of the Auryn Quartet, and pianist Peter Orth have now dedicated themselves to the chamber music of Fauré and, in addition to the two violin sonatas, have recorded a series of shorter pieces such as the Berceuse op. 16 or a Morceau de concours composed in 1903. As always with the audiophile label Tacet, the focus is on the music and its best possible recording and reproduction. Pleasantly unpretentious, this recording presents itself, because ultimately, it's the inner values that count. And these inner values can truly be heard in this recording. Lingenfelder and Orth let Fauré's melodies flow freely, bringing this music to life in a manner that is both relaxed and beautifully resonant. They prove to be a well-coordinated team, effortlessly passing the thematic baton back and forth while never losing sight of the larger musical arc. Overall, this is a recording that is as successful as it is tasteful!
